Knitting | Geneva Newborn Photographer

I learned to crochet at a young age, somewhere around 8 or 9 years old. My sister learned at the same time, and we were unstoppable in our creating of crocheted afghans. We would sit for hours and create afghans as gifts for friends, whether it was for a wedding or a baby shower, we crocheted until our fingers were numb. I give credit to my sister for being the one that almost always did 70% of the work, she was tireless in her endeavors. I was the one that got quite bored halfway into the project, and I was ready to move on to the next thing. Something new, with exciting colors!

I remember, very vividly, my grandma (trying) to teach my sister and I how to knit. One of the lessons was while we were riding the “L” downtown Chicago. I had a heap of bright red yarn in my lap, and knitting needles that might as well have been 3 feet long. I was a hopeless student. Since my grandma passed away just over a year ago, little memories like these are held very dear to me. She was always teaching us to try new things, to be brave, to conquer the impossible.

When I started newborn photography 5.5 years ago, I knew that crocheting would go hand in hand with all of props I needed. I had sticker shock at the prices I saw on etsy for these tiny little newborn hats. After crocheting a ridiculous amount of newborn hats, I knew that it was time for me to attempt knitting again. While visiting my in laws in the mountains of North Carolina, one of my mother in law’s friends graciously showed me how to cast on, and the basic stitch. I knitted up a storm over the next few months… I watched numerous youtube vidoes on knitting, read more blogs than I could keep track of and picked up this book (excuse the title!).
That was two years ago, and I rarely pick up a crochet hook anymore. Knitting is fun, and challenging. I am no expert, but when I can’t figure out a new pattern, I google it, youtube it…try, try again.

When I am not working on a photography project, editing or cooking, you will find me knitting. I knit on planes, in cars, on buses, on the beach, next to the pool, watching tv…I can’t sit somewhere and not knit. I am sure that there is a diagnosis for this problem.

I also “collect” yarn. I get ideas in my head of new projects that I want to try, colors, patterns the combinations are endless. I justify this addiction with the fact that I coupon like crazy when I buy my yarn. I do not coupon in any other area of my life, but if I can get a ball of yarn at 50% off, sold! I have bulky weight, lace weight, sport weight, sock weight, dk weight…and on and on!
